Okay so onto something at least halfway rant worthy , the idea of being offended by something like a finger, or a word. I mean we have all heard of "The Birdie" i.e. the middle finger, and we have all seen our middle fingers, so what makes others middle fingers so darned offensive? Really, who decided middle finger=bad, what is the reason we hold it at a sort of unholy sanctity, reserved for only our worst enemies? I decided I'd do some research into the middle finger first too see why it is so bad, first stop Wikipedia... here are my findings:
The middle finger really means nothing... I mean there is an allusion to archers in the 100 Years War holding up there middle fingers to there enemies, but according to the wikipediaist who wrote the article that may very well be the origin of the peace sign as well... okay so maybe that's not it, could it be the middle finger came into play to ward off the evil eye? Well if that were the case I wouldn't see it so often on the road.... No I get the finger then because I'm driving badly, not because I'm cursing their livestock, although I do curse livestock often... hrmmm....
So truly according to Wikipedia there is no definitive reason for your finger to be so offensive, so why do we act like it is, and why do we do it? Well simply put, people are asses.... And what I mean by that isn't that people are bootays, but rather people are stupid like mules. While I would love to just leave it here I don't quite have a sense of satisfaction so let me continue.
People are stupid, that was the point I wanted to really hit here. I mean the fact that the majority of the citizens in los Estados Unidos (The United States.... it sounds oddly poetic in Spanish though) are in fact offended by a simple finger gesture, one with no historical context or apparent meaning might I add, worries me. It's simple truths like this that keep me up at night begging for humanity to grow some sort of definable brain... I'd start up on "Curse Words" but really I'm sure you can figure out yourself that most should mean nothing special.... Point is should these "terrible" words or gestures really offend you or anyone? Its your choice, be offended or don't be offended in the long run your the only one it affects... Maybe I'm completely wrong and we should be offended at every last gesture and word.... Should we? Really tell me in a comment I can handle it....

I lost the game.
ReplyDeletelove, David.
I actually looked this up too and a lot of sites say it traces back to Ancient Greece and Rome. Apparently, the "thumbs up" gesture in Iran is the same as saying f**k you. In England and Ireland, the backs of the index and middle fingers together is equivalent to "flipping the bird" in the U.S.
ReplyDelete(I lost the game as well.)
ReplyDeleteYes, in 8th grade I did research about why middle fingers are offensive. I never understood. I think it's pointless as well.
