I think this is the awe-inspiring "American Flaw" right here. We are a country of obese, self-serving asses (pardon the language *sarcasm*) who don't give a rats ass what happens to people all over the world. Now I have begun to come to terms with this beast inside of me, and hopefully next year I can save a person or two from starving (believe me I am under no illusion that my little 30 Hours of fasting will save many or for long, but gosh darnit I can try). The people who really grind my gears though are the ones who not only don't realize how good they have it, but believe they deserve the life they happen to be born into.
If you know my personal life very well, you probably know that me and an ex-friend (lets call him Ryan for now) have had many debates about subjects like this, and I believe what he said may be what angered me to this point. This is what he said (or what I remember of it):
"Well all of the African people are going to die of starvation, AIDS, or be massacred anyways, so why help them? If we let the people of Africa all die off, it will be more land for the rest of the world, and we can make a country with fewer problems. Plus Africa is rich in natural resources, why not take them?"This pisses me off. How can we so frankly condemn an entire country and keep our humanity? The answer: we can't. If we all took this approach to everything and everyone out there, well the human race would be much sorrier than it already is. I mean not only would we have no reason to keep each other alive, but what would the point of living be? There is a special place in hell reserved for this line of thinking, a layer of hell in which one must endure the day to day hardships of these peoples lives, knowing that no one cares if you die or not... This is the human condition I fear, and we must fix it.
(PS Tomorrow I may post something on Joseph Koney, enslaved african child-warriors, the LRA, and how useless I find the United Nations to be (The United Nations- It's Your World.... what garbage))

Very nice post. And your ex-friend is an ass.
ReplyDeleteXD
I've did it [the 30 Hour Famine] twice, but this year I ate food until I was with the youth for the second day.
Us Americans are really blessed. People don't realize that and we all get self-righteous.
Awesome post (took you long enough... lol jk!). Write another one soon. :)

Jesus said and I paraphrase here..."he who does for the least of these does also for me". Translation; if you help others you are doing it for Jesusu not them, in essence for your own relationship with God. Lets not even get into the fact that it is ethically the right thing to do since we have been GIVEN so much.
ReplyDeleteOHHHH Kegan...it makes me happy to know that you have a conscience.
